Keywords help your resume in two primary ways. For one, they grab the attention of recruiters and hiring managers. Second, applicant tracking systems pick up on whether or not you have the right keywords on your resume to indicate you’re qualified for the job.

Refer to the job description for keywords to incorporate into your resume. Any competencies, certifications, or experience required should be included on your resume.

Show vs. tell with plenty of numbers

Your resume needs to show hiring managers that you have the ability to succeed on the job. Instead of merely listing job duties and responsibilities, you want to emphasize your accomplishments. Use as much quantifiable data as possible to showcase your ability to go above and beyond.

Use standard section headings

Once you choose the proper format for your resume, the next step is to ensure you include the standard flow and section headings. If you go against convention when naming these sections, you might confuse an ATS, which means you won’t get into the hands of a human reader, even if you’re qualified for the job.

The standard sections of your resume include:

  • Contact information

Your contact information is placed at the top of your resume, followed by a resume summary and core competencies section. The resume summary is a brief, punchy paragraph that highlights the most significant elements of your resume. A list of 10 to 30 core competencies should follow your summary.

The work experience section makes up the bulk of your resume. Here, you’ll provide your relevant work history, including your position, company, employment dates, and most significant responsibilities and accomplishments. Each accomplishment should be listed in a bulleted list and begin with a strong action verb. In a reverse chronological resume, your most recent position is listed first.

Finally, your education section includes your degrees. It can also include your certifications and training. You’ll list your most advanced degree first, and from there, list your degrees so that the most recent one is listed first. An exception to this is when you’re transitioning from one industry to another or making a career change. In those instances, listing your most relevant degree first is best. 

Additional sections you might include in your resume are Volunteer Experience, Awards, Publications, or Technical Skills. The additional sections you include are based on your personal circumstances.
