For each accomplishment listed, begin with the same type of bullet for each list (square, round, etc.). You should also use standard margins and spacing consistently. 

Create an ATS-friendly resume

Crafting an ATS-friendly resume is necessary to get past the computer bots most employers use to screen candidates. A reverse chronological resume format is generally your best bet to ensure your resume is readable by both humans and an employer’s applicant tracking system, or ATS.

Other elements of an ATS-friendly resume include:

  • Plenty of keywords from the job description that align with your experience.

  • Relevant required skills and industry lingo. 

  • Avoid placing content in the header or footer sections. An ATS cannot read these areas of a resume.

  • Steer clear of embedding images, charts, and graphs. An ATS doesn’t parse this information easily, if at all. 

  • Use standard section headings, like Work Experience, Education, and Technical Skills. An ATS generally doesn’t understand creative or nonstandard terminology. 

Use caution with creativity

Never use a creative template for your resume. You might be of the mindset that a creative resume will help you stand out from others, though this isn’t the case for most professions. In fact, submitting a resume with a creative template could hurt your chances of getting an interview. 

For one, ATS software typically won’t be able to read it. And suppose, by the rare chance, it does get past an ATS, most hiring managers prefer a conventional template. This is because they can easily follow the text and know exactly where to find the details they want. Standard, clean, and simple formats work best. 

Write a compelling work experience section

Your work experience section will make up the majority of your resume and needs to make a powerful impact. Here are some tips to make your work history stand out:

  • Incorporate five to six of your most impactful accomplishments for each position

  • Start each bullet point with a power verb

  • Use a variety of power verbs for a more significant impact

  • Use consistent formatting

  • Use lots of quantifiable data to highlight your accomplishments
